Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon on February 21, 1933, in Tryon, North Carolina, Nina Simone took to music at an early age. She later studied classical piano at the Juilliard School in New York City, but left early when she ran out of money. Performing in night clubs, she turned her interest to jazz, blues and folk music and released her first album in 1957, scoring a Top 20 hit with the track “I Loves You Porgy.” By the mid-1960s, Simone became known as the voice of the Civil Rights Movement. She wrote “Mississippi Goddam”, “Four Women,” and “Why (The King of Love Is Dead),” after the deaths of Medger Evers, and Rev Dr. MLK Jr. #artseducation #womenshistory #blackhistory

She was also a member of the Weusi Artist Collective based in Harlem during the 1960s and 1970s. Her work was featured in several exhibitions at key galleries and museums, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Brown was a staff member at the Medgar Evers College and an assistant professor at the Anne Arundel Community College from 1989-1990. She performed pioneering work in the field of computing.
